United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change

The United Nations Climate Change Conference, Durban 2011, will bring together representatives of the world's governments, international organizations and civil society. The discussions will seek to advance, in a balanced fashion, the implementation of the Convention and the Kyoto Protocol, as well as the Bali Action Plan, agreed at COP 13 in 2007, and the Cancun Agreements, reached at COP 16 last December.

Managing the Risks of Extreme Events and Disasters

The Special Report on Managing the Risks of Extreme Events and Disasters to Advance Climate Change Adaptation (SREX) was approved and accepted by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) on 18 November 2011 in Kampala, Uganda. SREX integrates expertise in climate science, disaster risk management, and adaptation to inform discussions on how to reduce and manage the risks of extreme events and disasters in a changing climate. The report evaluates the role of climate change in altering characteristics of extreme events; and it assesses experience with a wide range of options used by institutions, organizations, and communities to reduce exposure and vulnerability, and improve resilience, to climate extremes.

The Vibes of Ireland

Concept: In this experiment, approximately four million Tweets originating from Ireland were collected between September 21st and December 14th 2010. Tweets are short, information-rich messages that people around the world (including Ireland) post to Twitter. I mined Twitter and built algorithms that tagged the Tweets as being positive, negative or neutral. In doing this, I created a very accurate picture of how the emotions and moods of people in Ireland change and fluctuate over time.

CIA following Twitter, Facebook

In an anonymous industrial park in Virginia, in an unassuming brick building, the CIA is following tweets — up to 5 million a day. At the agency's Open Source Center, a team known affectionately as the "vengeful librarians" also pores over Facebook, newspapers, TV news channels, local radio stations, Internet chat rooms — anything overseas that anyone can access and contribute to openly.http://news.yahoo.com/ap-exclusive-cia-following-twitter-facebook-081055316.html

Linking SciVerse Scopus and Engineering Village

What’s the link between a SciVerse Scopus abstract and Compendex? How do you get Scopus author details via Engineering Village? Find out with this short video.
You'll also learn how to:
  • Link from the abstract in SciVerse Scopus to the corresponding Compendex record in Engineering Village complete with hyperlinked controlled and uncontrolled term.
  • Link from the abstract record in Engineering Village to SciVerse Scopus to see the list of references and details about the author(s), in addition to the list of citations which was already available.

Creating FootNotes using Word & EndNote Web

I've been getting quite a few queries about EndNote Web and FootNotes so here's how to do it.
To create a bibliography with footnotes and a bibliography:
1.From the EndNote Web toolbar in Word choose a bibliographic style by selecting “Format Bibliography.”
2.In Word, position the cursor in your document where you want to insert the reference.
3.From the Word “Insert” menu select “Reference” and “Footnote.”
4.The “Footnote and Endnote” window will open, click “Insert.”
5.From the EndNote Web toolbar select “Find Citations” represented by a magnifying glass icon.
6.Search for the reference you want to cite.
7.Select the reference and click “Insert.”
8.To cite a specific page number, select “Edit Citation” from the EndNote Web toolbar. Select the relevant cited reference and add the page number. Click the “OK” button.

Hope this helps !
