The table is based on 13 carefully calibrated performance indicators that measure an institution’s performance across four areas: teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook.Ciaran Quinnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07963716248971801714noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7011934690017051120.post-64698163551917001692022-09-06T11:31:00.002+01:002022-09-06T11:31:52.300+01:00The Metric Tide RevisitedAs part of FRAP (The Future Research Assessment Programme), an expert panel has been invited to lead a review of the role of metrics in research management and assessment.
This review, The Metric Tide Revisited, will take a short, sharp, evidence-informed look at current and potential uses of metrics against a set of tightly-defined objectives to:
Revisit the conclusions and recommendations of the last detailed review of these questions, The Metric Tide (2015), and assess progress against these.
Consider whether developments over recent years in the infrastructures, methodologies and uses of research metrics negate or change any of those 2015 conclusions or suggest additional priorities.
and look afresh at the role of metrics in any future research excellence framework and consider whether design changes now under consideration as part of the FRAP suggest similar or different conclusions to those reached in 2015.
The review was conducted over the Summer, and will be completed mid-September so we await with interest the published outcome.

Plans for this initiative were proposed in a European Commission scoping report in 2021. Under the Agreement, research actors across European member states (including research performing organizations, funders, and national or regional assessment organizations) will be invited to sign up voluntarily and pledge their commitment to translate principles outlined in the report into local assessment reforms. This funding marks Ireland’s first national budget aimed at dramatically improving the pathways for sharing research, and building transparent practices into the very fabric of scientific discovery. The funding of €1.725 million from the Higher Education Authority (HEA) has been announced by the Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, Simon Harris, to support the activities of the National Open Research Forum (NORF) and has been allocated to the Digital Repository of Ireland (DRI) to distribute to key initiatives identified by the NORF. They can include (but are not limited to) peer reviews on Faculty of 1000, citations on Wikipedia and in public policy documents, discussions on research blogs, mainstream media coverage, bookmarks on reference managers like Mendeley, and mentions on social networks such as Twitter.
Sourced from the Web, Altmetrics can tell you a lot about how often journal articles and other scholarly outputs like datasets are discussed and used around the world. For that reason, altmetrics have been incorporated into researchers’ websites, institutional repositories, journal websites, and more.
Altmetrics Explorer is an intuitive platform that enables you to monitor the online activity surrounding academic research.
Browse by author, group or department for your own institution, benchmark against peer organizations, report on the outcomes of outreach activity, and integrate the insights the data provides into evaluation and review processes.
To find out how to register for a Altmetrics Explorer account and to find out how to use Altmetrics Explorer to monitor engagement with your research papers, and showcase your influence check out the guide here

This initiative brought together nine major networks of research-intensive universities from major regions of the world. It was an opportunity to sign the "Sorbonne Declaration" on the rights of research data. This text strongly affirms the willingness of universities to share their data while firmly calling on governments to adopt a clear legal framework to regulate this sharing and to provide the means to put it in place. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, many of IReL’s partner publishers and vendors are supporting researchers and students by making content freely available during the crisis. They are typically doing this by either: removing paywall restrictions on COVID-19 related removing paywall restrictions on COVID-19 related research materials, or removing limits of the numbers of concurrent users for eBooks to cope with demand by students as they have moved to remote learning at short notice.

However, in Latin America an open access ecosystem for scholarly publishing has been in place for over a decade. In this post, Eduardo Aguado-López and Arianna Becerril-Garcia discuss open access developments in Latin America and the AmeliCA initiative to develop a cooperative infrastructure for scientific communication. They also reflect on how the recent proposals put forward by cOAlition S to foster open access publication in the Global North, could potentially negatively impact open access efforts in Latin America. The revised Plan S maintains the fundamental principles but a number of important changes are proposed in the implementation guidance.
These include: The timeline has been extended by one year to 2021;Transformative agreements will be supported until 2024;more options for transitional arrangements are supported;greater clarity is provided about the various compliance routes: Plan S is NOT just about a publication fee model of Open Access publishing.

However, it is unclear whether these criticisms and high profile declarations, such as DORA, have led to significant cultural change. In this post, Erin McKiernan, Juan Pablo Alperin and Alice Fleerackers present evidence from a recent study of review, promotion and tenure documents, showing the extent to which (JIF) remains embedded as a measure of success in the academic job market.Ciaran Quinnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07963716248971801714noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7011934690017051120.post-77288638215929271622019-03-08T11:07:00.001+00:002019-03-08T11:07:24.341+00:00Taking Stock of the Feedback on Plan S Implementation GuideIn this interesting piece Lisa Janicke Hinchliffe reviews the feedback submitted in response to the Plan S consultation and highlights 7 themes that emerged from the thousands of pages submissions made to cOAlition S.
Plan S is an initiative for Open Access publishing that was launched in September 2018. The plan is supported by cOAlition S, an international consortium of research funders. Plan S requires that, from 2020, scientific publications that result from research funded by public grants must be published in compliant Open Access journals or platforms.

It did so in support of the German open-access initiative called Project DEAL, after unsuccessful attempts to negotiate an open-access agreement with the publisher. The organization’s digital library will no longer have access to Elsevier’s approximately 2,500 journals, including The Lancet and Cell, once the subscription expires on December 31. University rankings are controversial. There is a lot of criticism on well-known rankings such as the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), commonly referred to as the Shanghai Ranking, and the World University Rankings of Times Higher Education (THE) and QS.
Nevertheless, universities often feel that they are under pressure to
show a good performance in these rankings and universities may therefore
pay considerable attention to these rankings in their decision making.

The Ten Principles are intended to guide universities, students,
governments, and other stakeholders in the responsible use of university
rankings. Nearly everyone at a university is involved in research, from students learning how to conduct research to faculty conducting research for publication to librarians delivering research skills training and doing research on the efficacy of library services. SAGE Research Methods has the answer for each of these user groups, from a quick dictionary definition, a case study example from a researcher in the field, a downloadable teaching dataset, a full-text title from the Quantitative Applications in the Social Sciences series, or a video tutorial showing research in action.Ciaran Quinnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07963716248971801714noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7011934690017051120.post-28134298708220496172018-06-05T11:21:00.000+01:002018-06-05T11:24:47.074+01:00What’s new in Open Access? This a new blog by Danny Kingsley who is the Deputy Director, Cambridge University Library responsible for Scholarly Communication & Research Services. Her role focuses on establishing new policies and strategies for scholarly communication in the digital age. It looks like a useful way to keep up to date with developments in Open Access.
"The world of Open Access moves fast and it can be difficult to keep up. We run regular updates for our community here at Cambridge and following a recent webinar, figured a blog about it might be a good idea too. Strap yourselves in, this is a bumpy ride."

Kristel Alla, Wayne Hall, Harvey Whiteford, Brian Head and Carla Meurk find that academic literature discusses research impact but often without properly defining it, with academic discourses mostly drawing on bureaucratic definitions originating from the UK. The authors highlight four core elements that comprise most research impact definitions and propose a new conceptualisation of research impact relevant to health policy.Ciaran Quinnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07963716248971801714noreply@blogger.com0
